Is This The One?

Isn’t that the million-dollar question? How can I tell if this is the one? Is this one my soulmate? How will I know when I find the right one? There is no magic answer, but I can tell you what seems to work. I asked a psychic one time if a certain person was my soulmate. His answer, “If you have to ask, then he’s not the one.” He went on to explain that with soulmates no matter how good or bad a day you have together, you wake up in the morning knowing without a doubt that this is the one and you go to bed at night knowing without a doubt that this is the one. Nothing that happens in between those two points can change your mind.

Whenever I find happily married couples in their fifties or older who have been married for most of their lives to each other, I always ask them, “How did you know this was the one?” Every single one of the men answered the same way. They all said that the first time they laid eyes on the girl, they knew in that moment that they would eventually marry her. For every one of those men it was love at first sight. “But why that one? What made you fall in love with that particular woman at first glance?” Each one answers differently, but they all have a vague unanswerable quality that the guy just knew she was it before they even knew what the girl’s name was.

The women all said they thought the guy was nice enough, just okay, or a little goofy but not too bad. None of the women fell head over heels right away. The women were all living a happy upbeat life and were not really searching for a husband when the guy came along. That may be a big part of the mystique that these women created. They were not needy or desperate. Truth be told all of the lifetime happily married women I know are very strong and independent, but loyal and loving women. None of them are nags or codependent types.

The thing that all of these couples have in common is that the each one was relatively happy and mentally healthy going about their lives, their goals, and their dreams. All of them planned to someday fall in love and get married to one person for life but none were attached to a soulmate type concept or ideal. None of these people was sexually loose but they were not complete prudes either. They chose not to sleep around because they had a strong sense of self-respect. Some had religious beliefs that added to the dynamic and others did not. All were of a mindset that you simply should not whore around for the heck of it.

In all cases, the man chased the woman. You have to remember the deep underlying needs of the male and females of our species. The man must hunt and conquer. If she is too easy to catch, then there must be something wrong with her. Right or wrong, men have a very deep down need to ‘win’ the girl. They were all upbeat, bright, kind, loving women with full happy lives of their own. None of the women were pushovers and none of the women were easy to ‘win.’ It was always love at first sight on the man’s end, but not on the woman’s. The women were not cold and unapproachable, so the men were able to charm them and ‘win’ them over. All of these relationships had at least a two-year courtship and engagement period. Their eyes were wide open when they said, “I do.”

Were they soulmates or just lucky? It depends on how you define soulmates. If you define a soulmate as your cosmic twin, then I would say no these people were very different types that hooked up and stayed happy together for life. In one example, the woman was a devout Catholic and the husband was just sort of generic Christian. She did not try to convert him and he respected her need to go to Mass every Sunday. No, he did not become any more or less of a Christian then he already was. They each respected the other’s right to be who they were. Nobody tried to change anybody. Who they fell in love with is who they stayed in love with. In another example, he was from an extremely conservative religion and she was very lightly Christian. She completely changed her entire way of life to be with him. She gave up makeup, stylish haircuts, jewelry and sexy clothes to become almost Amish in her life with him. She never regretted it because he was everything to her and she came to agree with his family’s religious beliefs. In none of the relationships were the couples a twin copy of the other. Yes, every one of those couples struggled in the first years of their marriage to find a balance between ‘me’ and ‘we’. Every one of those couples had to learn to listen, to compromise, to be fully present in the moment, and to show their love in a way that resonated with the other. However, they all managed to live that elusive ‘happily ever after’ that the rest of us only dream of.

If you define a soulmate as the right one for you, the one you were meant to spend the rest of your life with, the one specially designed to create ‘happily ever after’ with you, then yes, they were soulmates. No matter how bad things got, these couples never ever contemplated divorce. They did not stay together because of a vow before God. They stayed together because they could not fathom the concept of not loving the other one. Every morning they woke up knowing they were both in love. Every night they went to sleep knowing they were both in love.

Our Feelings and Attitudes Around 'Happily Ever After'

Our feelings and attitudes have a huge impact on our ability to achieve 'happily ever after.' Are feelings and attitudes the same thing or different? Does one cause the other to happen? Which one has more power over how we respond? Does the person experiencing them have any choice in the matter? What if our feelings and attitudes are in conflict?

Feelings are what they are. We cannot force them. You fall madly head over heels in love with someone or you don't. “You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink” comes to mind as I try to explain feelings. There is no magical way to change how we feel. Our feelings are not right or wrong; they just exist. Feelings are very powerful and definitely have a control over how we make choices and how we move through life. Think about the money, time, and focus we put into trying to feel good and avoiding feeling bad. It goes against human nature to want to feel bad.

Feelings are based in emotions. Emotions come from the heart. Therefore, I do not think we can change them from within our logical minds. If your girlfriend leaves you, then you feel hurt. You cannot be expected to simply stop feeling hurt. You will feel some level of sadness until you have finished feeling sad. It is possible to distract yourself for a while, but the feelings will just lay dormant until you allow them time to fully run their course. There is nothing wrong with wanting to distract yourself from the bad feelings of missing your girlfriend, but it will slow down the process. There are constructive things you can do to aid the processing of your feelings. Regardless of how you handle your feelings, you are going to feel what you feel until it works it is way through your heart. You might always miss her and feel a slight tug at your heart when you think back, but the overwhelming sadness will eventually pass. It always does. That is why they say, “time heals all wounds.” You cannot maintain any one feeling indefinitely. Emotions by nature are shifting and uncontrollable. They simply are what they are.

What about our attitudes? An entire multi-million dollar industry has been built around the power of a positive attitude. The industry would not have survived and thrived as it has if it were not a valid and real concept. Our attitudes are rooted in our belief systems. Our belief systems are chosen by our logical minds. Therefore, it is possible to make a conscious decision to change it. Our minds have complete and total control over what we believe. I do not think I need to bore you with another longwinded speech about the powers of a positive attitude. If you have ever tried it, then you have proven for yourself that it is possible to make an internal adjustment regarding your attitude.

So, which is stronger? Which has more influence over our choices and behaviors? Does one overpower the other? Let's say that you find yourself falling madly head over heals in love with someone. That is a feeling, an emotion. It comes from your heart. However, at the same time, you are entertaining a very pessimistic attitude towards love and relationships in general. The attitude comes from your mind. Which will win out, the feelings of falling in love or the darker attitude? It's hard to say. If you change your attitude, then the feelings of being in love can grow and perhaps become a wonderful source of joy for you. If you hold on tightly to your attitude, then eventually it will wear on the loving feelings and you will eventually stop loving that other person. What if the feelings of love were so amazingly powerful, that they caused the attitude to change and your core belief system about love and relationships changed too? Your feelings can definitely have an effect on your attitude, but more often than not, your attitude wins.

Your attitude is not more powerful because it is more important than your feelings. It is more powerful because it is more stubborn than your feelings. Let's look again at our example where the feelings are positive and the attitude is negative. We have seen people fall madly in love with someone who loved them in return. These same people had bad attitudes about love and relationships in general. Their feelings were not able to overpower their attitude. They believe “it's never going to work out anyway” and create a self-fulfilling prophecy. By not believing in love, they destroy their good relationship and then feel hurt by the failed relationship. Their minds take that as evidence to further continue with the negative attitude regarding love. The reason the attitude wins the battle more often then our feelings is because feelings are ever changing and flexible while attitudes are often locked into place and become an unmovable force.

What if the feelings were bad and the attitude was good? If you felt afraid that you might be rejected by the opposite sex, but you had a positive attitude towards love in general because you'd had 'happily ever after' role modeled to you as a child, then you could choose to keep moving forward despite your feelings of fear. Your attitude would win out over your feelings once again.

If your feelings and attitudes match, then you have an inner balance and harmony within yourself. Isn't this the age-old battle between heart and head? Attitude comes from your head and feelings come from your heart. When the two agree you are able to focus and move forward with confidence. When the two are at war, you have to decide which is right... the heart's feelings or the head's attitude? Perhaps in sitting quietly and looking inward at our feelings and attitudes from a detached perspective, we can evaluate and chose for ourselves on a case-by-case basis which one should lead us.

Getting Back Up On That Horse Again

Sometimes, for whatever reason, we give up and quit. Sometimes, we run out of resources or start up capital. Sometimes, our children, parents, friends, and loved ones need us during their time of crisis and we gladly put our dreams aside to rush to their aid. Sometimes, we are simply burned out and no longer feel motivated to take action despite still seeing the validity of the objective. Sometimes, we do not have the skills, education, or credentials that we need. Sometimes, we simply cannot do it alone and help is nowhere in sight. Sometimes, political powers make it very difficult for us to accomplish our goals because our aspirations conflict with their ideology. Sometimes, our competitors succeed at sabotaging our efforts. And sometimes, we feel like we do not have the strength to pick ourselves up one more time to keep moving forward, so we decide to just stay down for awhile while we catch our breath and regroup. We suspect that someday, somehow we will get back up on that horse again, despite feeling that right now in this moment, we just cannot go on anymore.

This article is not about how to solve the problems and remove the roadblocks that cause you to want to give up and quit. This is about giving yourself permission to get back up, dust yourself off, and make another go at it. All too often, once we give up and quit, we assign the “loser” or “failure” labels to ourselves and then assume that role in society. It is a noble place in society, the person who gave it a good try and failed. We get to hold our head up as one of those people who had the nerve to at least try compared to those who never do. And we can smugly tell others who follow in our footsteps where to watch out for pitfalls and why they too should expect to fail. Thus telling ourselves that we are also using our hard earned wisdom to assist others and to ease others from landing as hard as we did when we made our own face plant. Yes, there is the nagging sense that we are indeed losers and failures, but there are enough small benefits that it is not so uncomfortable that we actually have to take action and move away from having tried and failed. After all, there is no shame in trying your best and then failing. Right?

For all the comfort we get from our peers and dear old Mom telling us that we are still lovable even when we fail, losing still haunts us. Life is never stagnant. At some point, circumstances change. Sometimes, they change in our favor and sometimes they don’t. When things get worse, we shrug it off and reconfirm our choice to give up and quit. But when things get better, when competitors leave the market, when political ideologies change, when creative new ideas come to us, when new technologies make it easier for us to wear more hats and not have to hire help, when it looks like our old dreams and goals become more do-able, then what? Then we wrestle with the concept, “Do I try again? Do I take another risk? Do I put myself through all of that again? Now what?”

At this point, the question is, “Do I dare to hope? Or do I surrender to my fears that things will probably fall apart again?” At this point, it is easy to weigh the pros and cons, play around with statistics and probability analyses, and to fantasize success while also visualizing failure. This is all good and well. One should never make big decisions lightly or without all of the relevant facts on hand.

Sometimes, making the decision is easy. You dreamt of being a rock star when you were a teenager. Now, with home recording equipment and the Internet, it is possible to launch your music career and self-promote as an unsigned independent artist. However, you are older, wiser, and no longer see that dream as anything more than a youthful fancy. You no longer have the desire to work that hard or to put your spouse and children through the uncertain financial future of being a musician. Therefore, even though you may enjoy dabbling and playing around with such things, you decide to keep your “real job.”

It can also play out the other way, and saying yes to resurrecting your dream is easy. You wanted to start your own business. You created an excellent well thought out business plan, ironed out all of the details, analyzed the market’s likely response to your goods and services, and you have the expertise, confidence, and tenacity to make great things happen. However, you could not raise the start up capital. No matter how brilliant your business proposal and no matter how enthusiastic your sales pitch, you could not find an investor who believed in both you and your dream. Then along comes an old friend from high school you haven’t seen in years and not only do they have the ability to finance your idea, they are excited at the opportunity to co-create it with you. Therefore, it is easy to say yes and give it another try.

But what about when favorable circumstances are not overwhelmingly favorable, but just “more favorable”? Or when your competition leaves the company, but that does not guarantee you the next job promotion? Or when creative new ideas might work, but are not guaranteed to work? Or when you have acquired enough new knowledge to know what you did wrong last time, but not much more than that? Or when some wave of “change is in the air” washes over you and you just feel motivated again? Or when nothing at all has changed other than you feel deeply called to try again because the dream haunts you and will not let you quit with peace of mind? Then what? How do you give yourself permission to hope again when the hard concrete evidence validating the logic behind rekindled hope does not exist?

To this I give you three questions to ponder. One or more may apply in your personal situation.

Number 1) Let’s say that accomplishing your goal brings good into the world. For example, you are going to become a teacher, write music, run for office, cure Cancer, or some other dream that is not completely self-oriented, like “I am going to lose 20 pounds before my next birthday.” Your goal is in a service-to-others industry. In your own way, you are trying to make the world a better place.

Ask yourself, “If I work really hard struggling for years to bring my little gifts to the world, and it only helps two people, was it worth it?”

This question was posed to me by a well-meaning acquaintance years ago. I was going through a tough time. I wanted to write my little books and articles and to give my little speeches around the country to help others learn how to be happy. However, it seemed that no matter how hard I tried to help my own friends and family, they kept reverting back to negative self-destructive behaviors that kept them from living the life of ease and joy that they could so easily have had if they would just heed my well-intentioned advice. My question to this wise person I knew was, “Are you sure the world even wants to be happy? Maybe I’m just wasting my time trying to force something on people that is not really in their nature?” Without a “market” to sell “happiness” to, how could I possibly succeed? He then asked me, “If you spend the rest of your life writing your books and traveling all over the world giving speeches. And your words reach millions of people, but in the end, only two people are truly moved, only two people are able to really “get it” and apply what you are teaching, you only have a profoundly positive life changing effect on two people. If that happens, then was your lifetime of hard work and effort all for naught?” And so, throughout the hard times, whenever I was tempted to give up and quit, I would remember those “two people” and for them I would carry on.

Find how this line of questioning would apply to your own dream and ask yourself that same question.

Number 2) Ask yourself this question, “Who else would you be?”

Is this a dream that holds a piece of your soul? Are you at the very core of your being a musician, artist, writer, singer, leader, civil rights advocate, politician, chef, doctor, etc. For some people, a dream is just a dream. For others, it is about becoming who they already were. Look at someone like Oprah, she majored in journalism and wanted to become “Mary Tyler Moore”. She did not necessarily have the goal of succeeding at the level that she did, but at the core of who she is – is the personality that needed to educate, inspire, uplift, and entertain people. She simply became who she already was. The same is true for me; I was never not a wordsmith who meant well when offering unsolicited advice to anyone who would listen. At times when life required that I put my dream on the backburner for a while, I missed “being” the kind of person who goes after this kind of a dream despite the odds, more than I did the actual writing, speech giving, or any other part of the actual “doing.” And so, it may be with you. Are you able to spend the rest of your life NOT being who and what you really are? Can you say no to a music career because deep down it is fun, but not really something that haunts you and owns you? Does the music call to you, never leaving you alone, always screaming to be birthed through you? Then, who else would you be?

Number 3) If I could promise you that you would only fail two more times and that on the third attempt, you would achieve everything your heart desires and more. If I had a crystal ball and could promise you this without question, would you do it? Would you put yourself through two more failures in order to get to that “third times a charm” place in the universe?

I often hear from aspiring writers who are feeling quite discouraged because they have been turned down by a handful of perspective publishers. They need to ask themselves, “What is the average number of rejection letters the average unknown writer receives before a publisher finally says yes to them?” I remember at one time hearing that it was something like 27, and telling myself, “Okay, well I need to hurry up and blow through the first 26 rejections so I can get to that 27th one who will say yes.” Of course, we all want to be one of the lucky ones who gets a ‘yes’ sooner than what normally happens for the average writer. However, if you go into the whole process prepared and steeled for 26 rejection letters, it makes it a lot easier than if you go into it saying, “I applied to three and got rejected all three times, so I must not be any good at writing.”

Mulling over these questions does not guarantee you success as you contemplate once again giving hope a chance, but if you are on the edge and thinking that you just might take one more leap of faith, they can help you to remember why you wanted to fly in the first place. And of course, there is my old favorite from the Talmud, “If not now, when?”

The Sound of His Laughter

When you are searching for your Mr. Right, I want you to pay close attention to his laugh. It may seem odd for me to say that, but you can tell a lot about a man by his laugh. Real laughter is uncontrollable. For just a moment something strikes us as funny and the sound of laughter pours forth spontaneously and without any real control on our part. It bubbles up and gives away the secret part of us that thinks the event or situation presented is funny. Laughter can be faked, but that’s part of what I want you to analyze when you are listening to his laughter.

First of all, is his laughter real or fake? You can always tell when someone has one of those completely goofy laughs that nobody in their right mind would choose to have; those silly sounding laughs that cause everyone else to laugh too. You have also heard those completely fake laughs that sound like a bad actor in a Dudley DoRight play! Most people have fairly normal sounding laughs and they are spontaneous. If the guy you are interested in fakes his laugh occasionally to laugh at a small child’s attempt to tell a joke; that is okay. But, if he fakes his laugh on a regular basis, I would seriously question his overall ability to present his authentic self to the world. You may or may not feel like analyzing why he is faking it, but it is important to note if he is presenting a false joviality to the world on a regular basis.

Does he laugh easily? I have met a few men who had serious anger and violence issues. They do NOT laugh easily. Also, guys going through depression and other darker emotions obviously are not going to laugh as easily as someone who is naturally happy and at peace with his life. The brooding silent type may seem sexy for a while, but in the long run, you are going to want to have some lightness and fun in your life too. It gets to be a real bore to hang out with someone who is always incredibly serious and entertaining darker thoughts.

Does he laugh at people or with people? Nobody likes to be made fun of, but this has more to do with what your man finds as funny. Does he find humor in ridiculing others? Does he laugh at others because everyone is incredibly foolish or stupid in his eyes? Is he constantly critiquing people looking for a reason to laugh at them? It does not matter how witty or funny his presentation, it is not a good sign if your man takes his personal pleasure in laughing at others. You also do not want someone who constantly makes himself the butt of all jokes either. I have always found an underlying self-esteem issue when people spend a lot of time making fun of themselves. That is not the same as being able to laugh at one’s mistakes on occasion. I am talking about habitually devaluing one’s self. Also, is he able to find joy in someone else’s jokes? You do not want someone who only laughs at his own jokes and nobody else’s.

Does the sound of his laughter fill you with joy? Listen to the actual sound of his laughter. Does the sound make your heart go pitter-patter? It doesn’t matter if he sounds like thunder on a summer day or if he giggles like a little girl! What matters is that his laughter is infectious and makes your heart lighten. Imagine coming home from a really bad day at work. Upon entering the house, you hear his laughter coming from the kitchen. Does that sound lift your spirits? Or infuriate you even more? You want to be with someone whose laughter makes your heart sing. Laughter is the best medicine and you want to choose a man whose laughter heals your weary mind.

Do you laugh at the same things? Yes, you want to be your own person with your own interests and your own unique sense of self, but you also want to share good times with your partner. You need to pick someone who has a similar sense of humor to your own. There is nothing worse then having your partner roll their eyes like you are so uncool every time you burst out laughing. What determines a person’s sense of humor is wide and varied, including upbringing and level of education. If you share the same overall sense of humor, chances are that you are fairly compatible in those areas. You are somewhat on the same wavelength.

Do you laugh at the same time? You want to pretty much agree on when is the proper time and place for goofing around and making each other laugh. If he likes to crack jokes and laugh a lot during foreplay and you find it to be a total turn off, then you are going to have problems. If he keeps laughing at your girlfriends when you are trying to have a serious conversation, then you re not going to get along so well. This also works in the other direction. If you are the one who is constantly laughing and joking and he is the one getting upset that your timing is inappropriate, then you are not going to like hanging out with a fuddy-duddy. Compatibility shows itself in little things like timing.

If you have already got a guy and you are considering spending the rest of your life with him, start watching his laughter. Decide if the things you see are what you want in a lifetime companion. If you do not have a man, imagine sitting at the kitchen table over coffee and hearing his laughter at something witty you have just said. How would it sound? How would it feel to be in his presence when he was laughing? Look for a man whose laughter heals you rather than grates on your nerves. And make sure you both laugh together and often. It will get you both through the tough times.

Beyond the Apocalypse

Last week, I wrote a 2012 article about fearing for the predicted apocalypse. I normally only write one New Year’s themed article each year. But today, I felt a need to write another one and it is of a very different tone. Last time, I talked about being grateful for all that we have and enjoying every moment of our planet before it is blown up, thrown off its axis, overtaken by aliens, bombarded with solar flares, or whatever it is that will happen. And I meant it and I still mean it. I really am going to cherish every beautiful moment of this year as if it were my last. The thought still moves me to tears. (Geez! I have really gotten weepy in the last few years.) All of that aside, I am also getting really angry this year. I am angry with the puppet masters that control our politicians, corporations, schools, local governments, churches, etc. I am angry at their greed and selfishness. I am angry that they cannot see the long-term damage they are doing to this planet, to the masses, and to themselves. Do they really think that we have an endless supply of patience, resources, and money to continually funnel into their gluttonous little fists? This year, I am also going to do more than just shake my fists at the television. I am going to speak out more and hide less.

When I look at the traffic analysis reports that show me the types of people that come to my site, who reads my work, and what they all have in common, I am told that my readers are more educated than most and therefore they tend to be a bit more successful than most. I also know from your emails that you are some of the most warm-hearted and generous people too. I know that you have all been smart about your finances, careful as you maneuver your way through the last few years’ economic turmoil, and that you don’t have a lot of patience for foolishness, meanness, or negativity. That is not to say that you are airheads living in a fantasy world where everything is lollypops and rainbows or that you lie to yourselves and pretend that ALL it takes to succeed in life is to meditate about how rich you wish you were. You are very open to the esoteric, metaphysical, and/or spiritual ways of life, but you are not dumb or gullible about it. I am quite aware that you want to be happy and hopeful, but that you are also realists. So I try not to rant and rage about politics and things that are going wrong in the world and how it can feel as if we are losing against the greedy and corrupt.

But you know, so many of us that are smart, clean, professional, polite, and living our quiet peaceful little lives are feeling the same way. Many of us feel that they have let things get way out of control. We “get it” why the peasants are marching in the streets even if they are not very articulate or camera friendly representatives of the downtrodden, the suckered, the gullible, the needy, and the simply too smart to be fooled anymore. We tell ourselves that we are glad to see “someone is finally doing something about those greedy bastards” and we are comforted by the idea that we personally are not camping outside in the cold or getting arrested or that we are even the needy ones that they are trying to speak out for. It is nice to cheer for our team from the warmth and comfort of the sofa while shaking a fist at the television. We laugh at the stupidity of the other side for believing the foolish lies they are told. And we judge each other’s politicians for being sell-outs, liars, and control freaks. But we personally, do not contribute much more than our votes and maybe a little financial donation now and then. We do not speak out and we do not get involved. But we pray, we visualize, we meditate, and we hold the light and we just know that enlightenment will find its way into everyone’s hearts and will somehow win the day.

We tell ourselves that we are too busy with our careers, families, errands, hobbies, love lives, fitness routines, and other goals and projects to be able to do much more than read to stay abreast of what is going on and to make those occasional financial donations to the side that we think is right in this battle over who gets to control the direction we are all heading in together as a people. And we are right, we are too busy. Did we stop to think that maybe that was the plan all along? To keep us so busy with our low paying jobs and our personal lives and our every hungry desires thanks to the advertising industry. By keeping us so busy, we forget to get involved, to stand up for what is right, to remember that there is a “we the people” that has a huge amount of power and knowledge and that is supposed to be SELF-GOVERNED. We forget that our country is becoming an corporate run business where profit is our only god and the collateral damage to people’s lives is “nothing personal, just business”.

This year, I vow to stay angry longer, not to forget that I am angry. I vow to stay cognizant of the fact that there are real problems in this country that need fixed and that those who are trying to fix it need our help. I will not forget that things are broken even while I am still being grateful for the blessings and beauty that is in my life. This year, I will become angrier as a way to protect that which I am so thankful for. I am going to fight and argue as if it is my last chance to do so, because it just might be.

2012: What If They Are Right? - Looking Up Newsletter 122611

Hello everyone,

Every year, I write some kind of a “New Year’s Day” themed article. This year’s article has been chewing on me. With the whole 2012 Doomsday thing heavy on the minds of some of you, I feel an obligation to address the topic and yet I have nothing concrete to offer.

There is nothing in the astrological forecasting that causes me to think that 2012 will be any better or worse than most other years. Uranus and Pluto are still bickering on and off for the next few years, but that has more to do with “We the People” versus the corporations, dictators, greedy aristocrats, power mongers, etc. The ugliest part of their battle happened back in 2009 and 2010 when Saturn and Jupiter joined in and created a big Clash of the Titans type drama. Saturn and Jupiter have both moved on to focus on other things. Therefore, if anything, from an astrological perspective, the doomsday event already happened and we are on the other side of it now.

On the other hand, I cannot promise you that nothing bad will happen, that it is just another silly doomsday prediction that will end with a anti-climatic whimper like the others did. Although, that is mostly what I suspect is going to be the case.

So, I wrote today’s feature article from the perspective that if this really is our last year before all hell breaks loose, then we should really cherish the beauty of the planet and live with a good heart so that we have no regrets come what may. We should live with that same “seize the moment” energy that we would if we had a medical diagnosis saying that we only had one more year to live. What If They Are Right?

It is difficult to NOT stumble across End Times predictions and prophesies telling us that 2012 is the end of the world, as we know it. When I look into the astrological aspects, the ugliest time for us to deal with already passed back in 2009 and 2010… and it created the economic, political, cultural, religious, and societal upheavals we have been going through over the last couple of years. There is nothing bigger or uglier coming in 2012 if you look at it from an astrologer’s perspective. Did the mess that peaked in 2010 create the negativity that would cause us to experience an End Times in 2012? Now that we are on the downhill side of things and we are slowly recovering, would we now do something to cause our own demise? After so many of the evil dictators and warlords are dead or at least dethroned can they cause it to happen? And what of Nibiru, that giant mystery planet that is supposed to come swooping in and creating all kinds of problems for our entire solar system as he makes his long awaited swivel around our sun? Shouldn’t we be able to see him by now? Is it true that Google, NASA, and the others are deliberately blocking information so that we cannot find Nibiru on the sky maps? What of the aliens that will either save us or enslave us depending on who you ask? Why would they pick 2012’s winter solstice as their special date to arrive? If you spend much time at all reviewing the various 2012 doomsday plots and storylines, you come away with a lot more questions than answers. But for argument’s sake, what if they are right? What if, in some way, somehow, for some odd reason… this really is our last year on this planet… with these beautiful blue skies, lush greenery, sparkling water, and irritable but endearing inhabitants? What if this really is our last year together, then what?

Would it really do any good to collect supplies and brush up on our survivalist training? If meteors, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and such are going to blow the sky into a mess of ash and debris so thick that most of us will die… is it worth trying to live through that? If the nuclear facilities inevitably spill their toxins, do we want to still be here with the poisoned water and air? Without medicines, eyeglasses, comfortable shoes, bug repellant, and toothpaste, are we really going to feel lucky to have survived the initial calamities? Where are all of the seeds to plant new crops? Haven’t they all been hidden away while we were busy watching television? Who still knows how to make medicines from the plants and herbs? I have heard it said that most women in America under 30-years-old don’t even know how to cook. Maybe we would be better off dying in the first horrific wave rather than to have to trudge along creating a Second Coming of the Caveman.

And won’t we feel stupid if we spend the next year gathering supplies, hoarding medicines, and preparing our hideouts for the inevitable end that seems to never come? How many doomsday predictions have we seen come and go, and yet nothing really happens? Calendars end, they cycle around, one ends and the next one begins, isn’t that the nature of calendars? What if December 22nd 2012 comes and it looks just like any other day? I know a man who spent years using up all of the dandruff shampoo, multivitamins, and paper towels that he and his wife stockpiled before the big Y2K disaster did not happen.

And then there is this question of the aliens. If there are evil satanic aliens waiting to turn us into slaves or that are coming to annihilate us, then we probably don’t stand much of a chance against them anyway given their technological advantages. So again, what are we going to do to prepare? Re-watch Will Smith in “Independence Day”? Maybe we could play some video games and pretend that we are capable of battling them? I am not a very good slave. I have no intentions of being made to do hard manual labor. That’s not really my thing. If evil aliens come to enslave us, I will intentionally tick one of them off, so that they will kill me right away. And if there are benevolent aliens watching over us that will rescue us, then we do not really need to prepare ourselves, right? After all, they probably have plenty of shampoo and clean socks ready and waiting.

So, what is left for me to do? For any of us to do? You may or may not want to stock up on some supplies. You may or may not want to study up on some survivalist training. Me, I will go to the beach and embrace the colors of the sunset. I will breathe deeply of that coastal breeze. I will ride roller coasters. I will dance at Disneyland. I will embarrass my children with glee as I refuse to conform to their generation’s standards of good parental conduct. I will love this planet and do my best to forgive its inhabitants for their selfish and destructive ways. I will relish in every season and holiday as if it really is the last time that I will see the first flowers of spring, the last time I will watch fourth of July fireworks, my final summer, and the last time I will spend Thanksgiving with my loved ones at a table with store-bought food. I will go to the grocery store, the pharmacy, the gas station, and every other errand that I run with a prayer of gratitude in my heart that I am not foraging for edible roots, firewood, and something to use for toilet paper. I will be happy to buy yet another pair of shoes for my ever growing son and will be glad that he is not barefoot because I do not know how to make homemade shoes from tree bark and vines. And I might just spend a little more time gazing through his new telescope looking out at the heavens and wondering… are we alone and are there other planets as lovely as this one and will we ever get to see them during my lifetime?

I will live 2012 as if it is my last year on this beautiful planet even though I have not seen anything so far that proves to me that it is indeed the end of the world as we know it.

Beyond Love

All you need is love. Love conquers all. Through love, all things are possible. We are taught these concepts about love. While it is true that love is an amazing and powerful thing capable of incredible healing, motivation, and miracles; a marriage needs more than that. If love were really the only thing needed to sustain a long-term relationship, then most marriages would never end in divorce. The ugly truth is that if we are not compatible with each other, then the road to ‘happily ever after’ will be long and difficult.

Compatibility is so much more than just agreeing that you are both morning people and that you both enjoy the same style of lattes. Compatibility is a deep and twisted dynamic involving a combination of belief systems, personality traits, hopes and dreams, psychological needs, cycles and patterns, and mutual magnetism. There are pieces of the compatibility puzzle that we can logically fix, alter, change, and manipulate, but there are other pieces that we cannot affect on a conscious level. For example, raw passion and physical attraction for each other, you can love a person’s mind and spirit but simply not be sexually attracted to them. It is like leading a horse to water - you cannot make him drink. Sometimes no matter how much we want to like someone on a more intimate level, it just is not there. Other things, like philosophies of parenting can be negotiated and worked on to find common ground that works for both of you.

There are many areas of compatibility to consider before committing yourself to a life together. Most people absolutely believe in their heart of hearts when they make those marriage vows that the love they feel for the other person will override the daily ups and downs of sharing a life together. Unfortunately, life can quite easily throw a wet blanket over the fires of your love and reduce it to quiet smoldering embers and even to die out completely. Here is a list of important compatibility factors to consider before getting married. It is not in any special order of importance, as everyone weighs the various components and their importance differently. Some people really do not care about religion and spirituality while others feel that it of utmost importance. They all need to be looked at, contemplated, discussed, and evaluated openly and honestly before you make your vows rather than later in couple’s counseling.

Personality Types – It is often difficult to mix an extreme extrovert with an extreme introvert. A loud boisterous comedian will not mix well with a quiet reserved intellectual. Opposites attracting can seem cool at first, but eventually what seemed charming and cute later ends up grating on your nerves. It is a sad fact, but at least one of you will end up feeling as if you have to be something that you are not in order to please the other. If the core of your basic personalities is not compatible, then you will have a very difficult time seeing eye to eye on a lot of other things.

Monetary Needs and Goals – If one of you has very simple needs and wants to live in a modest home without a lot of debt and the other wants to live a glamorous wealthy lifestyle and is willing to run up a lot of debt to do so, then you are likely to have some serious problems. Who will earn the money? How will you spend it? How much do you need? Money problems are historically the number one topic of argument between couples. Financial compatibility is one of those areas where you can both compromise and make a special effort to see the other person’s viewpoint. If your views are not too extremely different and rooted in some sort of psychologically driven need, it is possible to come to an agreement.

Communications Styles – There are many different forms of communication styles. Some people are verbal in their ability to express their love, others are more touch-oriented in how they communicate, and some like to show their love through actions and deeds. Incompatibility in this area will eventually cause you to feel alienated within the partnership. Quite often in couple’s counseling, it is the communication methods that end up being worked on. It is not too difficult to take the time to really study and understand your partner, get to know how they personally need to receive the love and appreciation message from you, and then make a special effort to deliver the information to them in that manner. So often, we give to others what we personally would like to receive and unless you both have the exact same types of communication needs, that is not going to work.

Extended Family – Annoying interfering relatives and close friends have destroyed many beautiful relationships. Romeo and Juliet is a classic story of just such an example. As much as they loved each other, their families refused to get along. Compatibility in this area is not about finding someone with a perfect family, but finding someone who shares a similar belief about how much outside friends and family will be allowed to influence your time together. If one of you enjoys being part of a large family with a lot of interaction and the other prefers to have limited contact with extended family, then you could have some serious problems. Neither of you should ever have to turn your backs on your family and close friends because your spouse just does not want them around, but also if you really dislike a lot of people coming and going all of the time, you should not have to be forced to live within a lot of commotion and interference either. This is a tough area to navigate, but it can be worked out if you are both really sensitive to the deeper needs of the other.

Lifestyle – For the sake of simplification, we will keep lifestyle down to just the day-to-day patterns of life. Some are morning people and some are not. Some are really into sports and outdoors activities and others would rather sit indoors and discuss philosophies of life. Some are very go-go-go action-oriented and others are quite laid back and relaxed. Some like to have lots of friends over and back yard barbeques while others prefer that their home be a quiet place of contemplation, an oasis away from the daily grind. If the two of you are not too different, then this is an area of compatibility that can be worked on and common ground can be found.

Romance – This is a mixed area. On the one hand, you shared some level of romance during the courtship, but on the other hand, how you continue the romance after you are married can change drastically. Some folks love cute little nicknames like Sweetie Pie and Sugar Dumpling, while others hate it and think that it is annoyingly sappy. Some like lots of hugs and kisses while others prefer the words ‘I love you’ or ‘I appreciate all that you do for me’ instead. This is a lot like the communications area and you can definitely feel unloved and as if the spark has gone out of your relationship when you are not compatible in this area. Again, we often give that which we would like to receive instead of learning what the other person needs to receive from us.

Children and Parenting – The desire to have children is extremely powerful in some people and completely missing in others. This is not an area of compatibility that can be compromised on. Either you have children or you don’t. Plenty of couples have broken up over this issue. You cannot go into a marriage assuming that you will change the other person’s mind. It is rare that someone successfully changes someone else’s mind about having children. Even after agreeing to have children, couples disagree about how many they want to have and how they want to raise them. Most couples do not have compatible views about parenting. One may feel that the other is too strict, too controlling, or too demanding while the other feels that their partner is too accommodating, not involved enough, or too relaxed with the rules. However, unlike the initial decision as to whether or not to even have children at all, parenting styles is an area that can be negotiated and worked on.

Leisure Activities – All too often, first dates are dinner and a movie, going out dancing, or a romantic stroll on the beach. These are perfectly lovely first dates, but they often center around the courtship rituals instead of what the couple will really do together when they are married. While some love to camp, hike, and go beach combing, others prefer wine tasting, coffee houses, and Broadway plays. With an open mind and a loving heart, this is definitely an area where compatibility can be created.

Sense of Humor – Laughter is the best medicine. Laughter is one of the best ways to end conflict and tension. A couple that laughs together and finds themselves easily smiling within each other’s company has a far greater chance of staying together ‘until death do us part.’ If one finds burping and farting to be extremely funny while the other thinks it is tacky and disgusting, then you are going to have problems. Some love a dry intellectual wit; others prefer practical jokes that involving a lot of humiliation and embarrassment. This is a difficult area to change because it is a lot like sexuality, it either works for you or it doesn’t. What one person finds funny is not necessarily something you can fix or manipulate into matching what another person enjoys. ‘A Good Sense of Humor’ is one of the top things on everyone’s list of ideal partners. Defining what that means to each of you is the key.

Work Ethic – This is an obvious one. If someone is lazy and someone else is a workaholic, then there will be compatibility issues. It is something that can be worked on together, but if one of you really wants to live the pampered life and the other disagrees, then there is not a lot you can do about it. It will eat at the relationship causing anger and resentment.

Ability to Compromise – You would be amazed at how many people find it sexy that someone always sticks to their guns. On the other hand, others really value the ability to work as a team member and to be able to make decisions from a joint perspective. It is going to depend on leadership skills, whether or not one or both of you believes in dominance and submission, self-esteem, and other dynamics. This is a hard area to change. If you are both really at peace with the idea that one of you will make all of the decisions and will control everything, then you are compatible in this area. However, if one of you wants to have that situation but the other seriously wants to be equals making joint decisions and no one person being more right or more wrong then the other, than you are not going to be very compatible in this aspect. If both of you agree that one should dominate the relationship, however you cannot agree as to who is in charge, then your inability to compromise will be a disaster. If you are not compatible in your ability to compromise, then you really cannot fix the other disagreements can you?

Sexuality and Fidelity – Most people agree that part of the marriage vows is a pledge of fidelity. This is an obvious area of importance that you must agree on. You will sleep with other people or you won’t. More importantly in this area is the general idea of sexual compatibility. There are a lot of deep psychological buttons that get pushed and triggers that go off when we are in a sexual relationship with someone. Some of them can be positive and some can be negative. Some can be consciously altered and others are buried deep within the subconscious and will be next to impossible to change. Without going into a huge discussion at this time, suffice it to say that you are either turned on by someone or you are not. Sexual compatibility is extremely important and very difficult to change. This is not the same as technique and style. That can be learned and mutually explored. There is only so much you can force yourself to do for your spouse’s sake before your own desires shut down. Natural frequency of sexual activity can also be a problem. It is not unusual for one partner to have a much higher sex drive then the other. One is typically made to feel cold and uncaring for not wanting it more often while the other is made to feel like some kind of a dirty sex addict for wanting it more often. This is an area that can be tough to negotiate, but it can be done if both partners agree to some ground rules that the first one is that there will be no guilt trips allowed.

Ability to Share – Some people are simply selfish and greedy. Others enjoy sharing everything. It does not take long to see that the ‘mine vs. ours’ debate is extremely destructive to a long-term relationship. You need to agree on division of property or agree to share. The ability to share will actually hint at the core of the me/we dynamic in a relationship. Are you roommates who sleep together or are you two halves of a single unit? This is a weird area of compatibility that people often overlook but it will hint at things to come in your marriage. This is the area that causes such statements, like “I let you have children didn’t I? I care for your children don’t I? I let you have a new car didn’t I? Why do you have to keep attacking me for more money?” Incompatibility in this area will bleed into many other areas of your life and it is extremely difficult to change someone else’s views about such things.

Religion and Spirituality – You do not have to have the same beliefs and you do not have to practice the same religion. You do have to agree that you will or will not follow the same spiritual path. This is a mixed issue. For those who do not really care one way or the other, you can compromise. For someone who is extremely religious, they will need to find someone who pretty much agrees with them or they will be miserable. Love alone cannot heal spiritual incompatibility challenges. There is nothing worse than feeling as if you have to choose between your lover and your god. It will eat at you until you resolve it within yourself.

Education and Intellect – Nobody likes to feel like they are stupid and nobody likes to feel that they are talking to a brick wall. Someone can be quite smart but not have a lot of formal education. Someone can have multiple college degrees but no common sense. Chances are that you are attracted to another person somewhat because they meet your minimum requirements for this area, but it does happen that people will get together for other reasons and completely overlook the importance of intellectual compatibility.

Cultural Beliefs – You need to agree that you will both be white supremacists, or you will both hate gays, or you will both be activists, or you will both be freedom fighters, or you will both be couch potatoes, or you will both be coaches and mentors to our youth, etc. It is not that you have to work hand-in-hand, but you really cannot match a Vegan with a Butcher Shop Owner and expect them to be compatible. They might love each other, but their belief systems in this area will be difficult for both. If neither of you really cares what other people do with their lives as long as they don’t meddle in yours, then you are more compatible than couples who are passionately committed to opposing social causes or cultural belief systems.

Public Image – Some people do not give a damn what others think of them. Some people care very much about their public image, especially if their career or their life purpose is somehow connected with the public at large. A politician and a stripper are going to have compatibility issues as a married couple thrown into the public eye every time the politician campaigns for office. That is an extreme example of course, but incompatibility in this area can make or break careers, destroy one’s ability to reach their personal goals, and can make the one who does not care what others think of them feel like their partner cares more about the public opinion than the marriage itself. For most people this is not a huge topic of concern, but if it will be for you, then you should make sure you have compatible views before you run for a high profile position.

Reliability – Nothing destroys trust faster than a series of broken promises. Without trust, love will disappear. Some people get distracted and forget to show up to meetings or forget to pick up the list of groceries on the way home from work. Will that make you crazy or will it be completely fine with you? Does it matter to you that they keep their word or do you let things slide? What about little white lies? You had better both agree on what level of trust and reliability you will have between each other or the marriage is doomed from the start.

Social Skills and Popularity – This is somewhat like the extended family and the basic personality portion of compatibility but there are a few differences. If you are the type of person who needs a lot of one-on-one time with your partner and need to feel that you are the number one center of their universe, then you may not want to marry someone who is a social butterfly with lots of friends and colleagues telephoning, dropping by, inviting them out to play, and dragging them off to group activities. On the other hand, if you are one who thrives on social activity and love your friends like they are all family, then you are going to feel tied down and caged by a lover who expects you to focus only on them day in and day out. This is an area where compromise can occur, but it is not an easy area to change.

Honesty and Integrity - How do you feel about someone cheating on their taxes? How do you feel about someone who does not give back the extra change they just received from a cashier? How do you feel about hidden pasts and skeletons in the closet? How do you feel about secrets and lies? This is another area of compatibility that people often do not bother to think about until after it is too late. It is not the same as fidelity and loyalty, but it does affect your overall respect and trust of someone. How would they conduct themselves when nobody is looking?

Depth of Connection Needed – Some folks are fine with a light superficial relationship and others need to be deeply connected soulmates. It is important that you and your partner are compatible in this area because if one of you wants a deeply connected relationship and the other wants to keep things light, then there will be hurt feelings. The person who wants more is going to feel the relationship is empty and without substance. The person who does not want to go that deep is going to feel like someone is trying to psychoanalyze their every thought, feeling, and action under a microscope.

Whether you are using an astrology compatibility report, a professional matchmaker, a book on compatibility, a matchmaking website with computer generated matches, your friends’ opinions and feedback, or just your gut instinct to help you find your best partner, you need to know that on most levels you and your lover are compatible as well as in love. Yes, the relationship absolutely must be a love match because love motivates you to want to fix the problems that come between you, but you also really need to be compatible so that the road you travel together has the fewest possible potholes, roadblocks, and fallen debris in your way. Falling in love is easy; staying in love is a whole other story.

The weather is promoting the idea that I should curl up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa, a warm blanket, and a good book. However, my responsibilities and duties are saying otherwise. Still, my brain has already found its way to the sofa and is thinking that a candy cane would make a lovely stir stick in that hypothetical cup of cocoa.

Passion’s Search for Destiny

She was haunted by a man whom she had never met. He came to her in her dreams. It was not just a reoccurring dream about some random Prince Charming archetype. This guy had flaws. He was just as mixed up and lost as she was. She would wake up from a dead sleep to the sound of his voice whispering in her ear, “Look out the window.” She would argue in her half asleep stupor, “Be quiet! I’m sleeping!” Again, he would whisper, “Look out the window.” She would eventually drag herself up from the cozy comfort of her bed to gaze out the window. There was the full moon big and beautiful. It magically called to her from somewhere in the back of her soul’s oldest memories.

She could feel him there, her ghostly suitor. She knew that if she spun around quickly, he would be standing there behind her, but every time she turned, there was nothing there but silence and darkness. Somewhere in the recesses of her mind, she could hear him silently promising, “Wait for me… I’ll find you if it’s the last thing I do.” She would toss and turn for the rest of the night feeling his intense presence and wrestling with the fact that he was not ‘real’.

As the years went on, she would learn that he did not know her name and that he called her Destiny. She began to call him Passion. She was not allowed to search for him. She was to sit still and wait. It was part of the game, part of the agreement. His challenge for this lifetime was to search for his Destiny. After all, what is Passion without Destiny? He had to learn how to recognize her. She had to learn how to wait in blind faith that he would find her. Both had to live real lives with real mates. Neither could shake the very real belief that the other one existed somewhere out there.

How many times would she convince herself that the man standing in front of her was her Passion? How many times would it not be true? How would she know when it was finally him? How many women would he mistake for her? Would Passion and Destiny burn out and give up, writing it all off as just some figment of their imaginations? Do soulmates really exist? Or are we looking for an impossible ideal?

A soulmate is not just someone that you love from the depth of your soul. They are not just someone that you have a karmic connection with. They are not just someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with. They are someone you miss hanging out with before you have even met. They are the one that upon first meeting you simply sigh in relief and say, “Ah there you are, I’ve been waiting for you.” There is no questioning, no ‘getting to know you’ stage. You have known them for all of eternity. You may want to share the stories of your journeys and how you came to find each other, but you already ‘know’ them as well as you know yourself. You see yourself in their eyes. You understand them on a soul level because you share the same source.

Unfortunately, it is not always a blissful experience. Most of us are not ready to meet our other halves because we are not even ready to look ourselves in the mirror. Until you can truly love and accept yourself, then you will not be able to love and accept your soulmate. They are not some fantasy person sent to save you from the ups and downs of real life. They will not make your life a magic perfect delight. They are not sent to rescue you, fix you, or even to make you happy. They will simply love you on a level that is unlike any other.

If you do not hear the call of a long lost soulmate, count yourself as blessed. I mean this with all of my heart. You are the lucky ones, those who never hear the soft whisper of a far away soulmate. You have the freedom to love anyone you choose. You get to make any kind of match that pleases you. Do not try to force a soulmate relationship. Be content in knowing that you are exactly where you are supposed to be, doing exactly what you are meant to do.

If on the other hand, you do hear your Passion calling, or you see Destiny in your dreams, then my prayers go out to you my dear. For yours is that path of finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Do not ask me to tell you if they are worth the hunt. Can you bring yourself to give up the hunt even if you tried? Only you can gauge your ability to silence that cosmic voice calling you to hold out for that certain person that only you will recognize. Only you know what it is going to take to find them. Perhaps the angels will smile upon the two of you and help with some old-fashioned happenstance. Perhaps you will telepathically connect and find your way into each other’s arms. Perhaps you were just meant to experience the longing. Perhaps you will go through some bad relationships first so that when you find your Destiny, she will be that much sweeter and more appreciated. Nobody knows for sure how it will play out. But I believe that on some level, deep down, you know.

Did you already meet your soulmate and choose to walk away from each other? Was the intensity too much? Did it scare you? Was it overwhelming? Was it too hard? Will you have a second chance with them later down the road? Will you miss them forever? Yeah, probably. Will you learn something about unconditional love from them? Yeah, probably.

Did you find each other and recognize the fact that they shared the same soul as you? Did you hold on tight? Count yourselves as the very rare and incredibly blessed. Cherish the gift of finding yourself in another’s eyes and seeing just how beautiful you are.

Faith and Destiny

Destiny knew that she had a great calling to fulfill. She had agreed to take on a spiritual assignment that would bring love and joy to her little corner of the world. However, her inner critic was loud and persistent. She did not believe that she was capable of accomplishing that which she was meant to do. Even after years of spiritual lessons and tutoring from the angels themselves, she still did not believe in herself. It wasn’t that she did not want to do it. Her inner critic always convinced her that she wasn’t ready quite yet. Years were passing by and she was still waiting to become worthy of her own special place in the world.

The angels have a way of making sure that we fulfill our promises to them, so they sent Faith to cheer Destiny on. At first, Destiny hardly even noticed that Faith was present. Faith would not be ignored. She made a point of getting Destiny’s attention and she forced Destiny to take her seriously. They soon became the best of friends. Destiny had never had a friend to cheer her on the way that Faith did. Faith found that Destiny was very good at pointing out which path before them was the divine path for the two of them. So, with Faith’s undying belief and Destiny’s sense of direction, they traveled together focusing on healing each other’s old wounds and on how Destiny would fulfill her promise to the angels. Faith had not been asked to make any commitments to the angels other then to support those who had made promises.

After a handful of years traveling through life with Faith, Destiny was finally ready to begin her spiritual mission. With Faith cheering her on, she began making the formal plans and preparations. She quit her ‘real job’ and went to work for the angels. She began the task that had been assigned to her and fell flat on her face. It hurt. Faith helped to pick Destiny back up again and soothed her until she was ready to try it again. Never at any time did Faith doubt that Destiny had what it would take to make this thing happen. So Destiny dove again. Yet again, she failed. Again, Faith was there to keep her believing in herself when her inner critic was shouting out, “See, I told you that you’d fail!” Just as Destiny was about to make her biggest and most dramatic attempt at fulfilling her promise to the angels, Faith suddenly disappeared from her life. Destiny had made such a huge running start towards this third attempt that she couldn’t do anything but keep going if nothing else as a tribute to her love of Faith. Destiny made it much further and farther that third time, but she still failed. Without Faith there to pick her up again, she did not feel that there was any point in trying again. She had failed Faith and she had not kept her promise to the angels.

As life’s dramas swallowed Destiny’s time and energy, she kept reflecting on what had happened. Where was Faith when she so desperately needed her? Why had Faith deserted her? Would Faith ever come back? Why had she failed at giving her gift to the world three times? Why would the angels ask such a thing of her and spend all of those years training her if only to let her fall on her face over and over again? What would she do with her life now that she was no longer working for the Angels? Who would she become since she was not living out her own promises? Would the angels ever forgive her? Would she ever forgive herself for losing Faith? Would she ever forgive herself for failing at her spiritual calling? Who would fulfill her promises now that she was such a loser?

Slowly, Destiny began to miss being the kind of woman who accepts huge cosmic challenges. She missed being the kind of woman that Faith could believe in. She missed being the kind of person that angels would seek out when they needed assistance. She missed being the essence of who she really was. She came to see that even if she failed every single time for the rest of her life, there was no one else that she would rather be. There really was no other path for her then the one that the angels had pointed her towards. She found her own inner belief. She healed her own wounds. Destiny stood up again and began walking carefully down that path again. This time, she would have to do it without Faith. Nobody believed in her. Nobody supported her. Nobody really loved her. It did not matter anymore because she believed in herself, she supported herself, and she had finally learned to love herself.

When Destiny took her fourth leap of faith and dove into her spiritual work, it began very very slowly but steadily. This time, it began to work. This time, she was not afraid. This time she would not quit if she fell. This time she would fly with her own wings not on someone else’s. She still desperately ached for Faith’s companionship, but she did not require someone else’s belief in her anymore. Faith would always be her favorite old friend no matter where she was and no matter if they ever saw each other again, but Destiny could walk tall and travel alone now. Silly things like success and failure did not matter anymore, just living the life that she had promised to live.

Do not be afraid to walk alone. Do not wait until others cheer for you. Do not stop yourself because your support system has disintegrated. The angels may not always help you the way that you want them to, but you also must remember that you would not be asked to do something spiritual and holy if they did not believe in you.

Giving Up Too Soon

So you feel beaten up and bruised and you are ready to quit. You have no support system or the one you have is pathetically inadequate for the goals you have set. You are so tired that the couch is looking more and more inviting everyday. You have bills piling up and you probably ought to get a real job anyway. The failure rate is statistically high and nobody is going to fault you if you quit. Who really cares if you give up and quit now? You do.

Let’s look at each piece one at a time. You are beaten up and exhausted. Congratulations! That means you have been working harder then you have probably ever worked in your life. You would not be able to accomplish anything of real importance if you were not willing to bust your rump plowing through everything on your to-do list. You may need some lessons in balance and patience, but not in how to apply good old-fashioned elbow grease. If you can schedule a short break to replenish your strength, then do so, but do not give up and quit all together. If there is no way you can stop now because you have too many important deadlines then bust through the deadlines. Can you speed it up and finish things early so that you could squeeze in a break? After a full night sleep, do you think that you would still want to quit or would you be ready to dive back in? The fact that you are working so hard is not the problem; it is that you are not getting adequate rest and relaxation. Find a way to create balance.

You have nobody that will pitch in to help you or else the help you have is not all that helpful. Kind of reminds me of when my two-year old tries to help with the laundry. He picks the dirty laundry up off of the floor and stuffs it into the dryer along with the stuff that just finished drying. Well intentioned, but not as helpful as he thinks he is. I wish I could give you magic solutions as to how to find helpful people when you are working on your goals and dreams but the truth is, most people are too busy with their own lives to be able to offer much assistance anyway. Unless you can afford to hire people to help you or you promise to help them on something they need help with, you probably are not going to find a whole lot of help. Also, there is the learning curve and how much time it takes to teach someone how to do what it is you need help with. It is a rare and beautiful thing when the perfect person comes along with nothing better to do then to roll up their sleeves and help. It is a tough reality, but basically, it is your goal, your dream, and your job to make it happen.

If the project you are working on means anything to you, then you won’t really enjoy the couch potato solution as much as you might think. Funny thing about the really big powerful dreams, they haunt us. Every time you turn around, there it is following you around reminding you that you have not finished it yet. It will keep showing up in everything you do and especially in the things that you do not do. If it really matters, if it is your calling, if it is your life’s work, then it is not going to let you become a couch potato. Lying around not doing your dream will be more exhausting and depressing then when you were working your buns off trying to make it come true. Take a quick break if you need to, but do not get too comfortable sitting there and do not bother trying to convince yourself that you are going to stay content giving up. The longer you sit there, the further behind schedule you will be and the more you will have to do to catch up with where you were when you quit. You know how it is when you take a week off for vacation. You have to work two or three weeks to catch up with everything that fell behind. You have got to take your mental health breaks, but do not make it a permanent vacation.

What if you have financial problems or family obligations that are seriously nagging at you? That is such a difficult position to be in. Only you can determine what is in your long-term best interest. Again, a support system would be nice, but if they are not there to help, then you have to create balance. If you give up on your dreams to take care of and support everyone else, you may feel like you are doing the right thing in the moment, but was your life better off for it? If you disregard everything in order to stay focused on your dream, will it cost you the companionship of your loved ones down the road? Who will be there to celebrate with you when you finally do succeed? Not too easy to find a wealthy philanthropist to support your efforts to live out your dreams without earning a living. You have to make those really tough choices. Somehow, you have to create balance between your dreams, your ability to keep a roof over your head, and your ability to keep loved ones near and dear.

It is easy to quit where so many others have already gone and failed before you. Survival of the fittest dictates that not everyone is ideally designed to accomplish all goals. Not everyone is supposed to be an entrepreneur. Not everyone is meant to be a musician. Not everyone is meant to be president. The truth is, if you have picked a goal that is suited to your own natural talents and gifts and if it is infused with your own passion and fire, then chances are that you are one of the lucky few who is meant to live that dream. Just because everyone else failed does not mean that you are meant to fail too. Statistics do not mean anything unless you decide to become one.

You are either going to quit or you are going to find inspiration and keep going. You can quit if you want, but you already know if quitting will feel worse then trudging through a little while longer. Somewhere you know deep down if you are meant to succeed or not. What if you were meant to succeed and role model tenacity to those around you? What if that was somehow the divine cosmic plan all along? God loves an underdog! Don’t quit just yet.

Fear of Failure - Looking Up Newsletter 112111

Hello everyone,

Today was “one of those days”. We sent the new December forecasts out to the subscribers late yesterday and shortly thereafter we started receiving emails from readers asking why we had chopped the bottom half of the emails off. We spent most of today trying to figure out what happened.

It turns out that Yahoo and Gmail are both "truncating" the emails. So far, Hotmail, Incredimail, and Outlook are not messing with the emails' layout. We are only seeing problems with Gmail and Yahoo.

When my daughter looked at her copy of the Capricorn forecast it was chopped off and at the bottom of the email was a note from Yahoo saying that the email had been truncated. When she clicked on the "show full message" button, then it revealed the full newsletter as it is meant to be seen.

Later, when my son looked into his Gmail account he found a similar link stating that the email had been “clipped.” Gmail allowed him to expand it back to the full-length when he is logged into a desktop computer but not from his cell phone.

Therefore, we have redesigned the layout of this newsletter in hopes that it will not fall victim to the same fate as the monthly horoscopes. We were also hoping that it would be easier to read from cell phones.

What If I Fall Flat On My Face?

I hope you do. Sounds awful, I know. But I really think the best thing that can happen to you is for you to take a timid little leap and fall flat on your face. Then, I want to see you get back up, evaluate what you did wrong, and jump again. Keep on taking that leap of faith and learning from each and every mistake until you become used to jumping and used to falling. Then, you will get over the fear of falling and you will finally begin to concentrate on flying. I want to see you run with everything you have and dive into your dreams with so much passion and fire that you forget all about the possibility of failing. You will never find your wings until you do.

The fear of failure is a cruel and stupid trick we pull on ourselves. The fact that the fear of failure stops us from going after our goals and dreams means that we have already failed. I ask you this, who cares if you fail? Brilliant people fail every single day. Brave tenacious people fall flat on their faces and even get laughed at every single day. Here is an example of a perfectly nice person who was known to fail, Christopher Reeves. How many mornings did he wake up telling himself that he was going to walk and then went to bed having failed yet again? Great guy, people loved him. He never let a little thing like yesterday’s failure stop him from working hard again today. He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. Who ever planted that stupid idea in our heads that we had to be successful at every single thing every single day in order to be likeable?

What is failure anyway? In my eyes, Christopher Reeves was definitely not a failure. Nobody with that much tenacity, focus, and drive fails. He was a real hero. You have not failed until you have given up trying. As long as you are still taking leaps of faith, you are still a winner. Failure, like everything else, has its breaking point. At some point, if you hit at it in the same spot over and over again it eventually breaks. How many light bulbs did Thomas Edison make before he got it right? Most people do not know the answer to that because they do not care how many times he failed before he finally succeeded. He kept learning from each attempt, adapting to the new information, stayed the course, held the dream, and did not let the fear of failure nor the fear of other people’s ridicule stop him.

One of the reasons that I think we hear so many stories of immigrants coming to this country and making it big is because they were raised on stories of the ability to create whatever kind of life they envisioned for themselves here. The stories they grew up hearing about how ‘everyone has the ability to succeed in America’ overrides any underlying belief that they themselves could fail. They do not have a fear of failure so they just roll up their sleeves and get to work making their dreams come true. Sure, they stumble and fall and learn a few lessons along the way, but they certainly do not give up and quit.

Are you afraid of what other people are going to think of you if you fail? Have you ever met someone who played it ultra safe that was very impressive? People who do not take risks are seldom if ever cheered, admired, or in the limelight. Besides, Americans love an underdog. We love to see some scrappy go-getter who has no business thinking they can win. We love to watch that same person stumble and fall a few times only to pick themselves up and really make something of themselves. It is the American Dream. Hollywood knows it. They have made an entire industry of showing us the stories of underdogs who dust themselves off and finally become winners. Nobody pays money to watch a movie about some perfect person who designs a perfect dream and experiences a flawless life while accomplishing everything they set out to do easily and effortlessly. Boooooring! We do not like people who come across as too perfect anyway. So go ahead and fail, it gives us a reason to pay attention to you, to relate to you, to cheer you on.

One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given on this subject was back in high school when I was first learning how to water-ski. I was told, “If you aren’t falling down, then you aren’t trying very hard. You’re playing it safe, staying in your comfort zone. You aren’t getting any better.” That pushed me to get past my fear of falling. I beat the heck out of my poor body that summer, but I also made impressive gains in my ability to master the sport. Nobody talked about how many times I fell that summer nor how black and blue I was, they only talked about how fast I was learning and what a great job I was doing. My teacher would sit back with this self-satisfied smirk on his face because only he knew how hard it had been for me to push past that comfort zone to allow myself permission to fall down. Nothing beats taking that big bite out of life and having it bite back just a bit! Laugh it off and dive in again.

Are you really going to shelve something so dear to your heart because you might fail? If I could promise you that you would only fail twice and on the third attempt you would succeed, then would you go ahead and suffer through the first two failures in order to get to that third time? Of course, you would. All that is left to debate is how many times. So, go ahead… take that first leap of faith.

Good morning,

My youngest son turned 10-years old over the weekend. Time flies.

I remember when I had my first son (almost 23 years ago) and everyone kept warning me about what a big commitment it was. They kept hounding me about how I had just committed the next EIGHTEEN YEARS of my life to that baby boy. They made it sound like I had just sentenced myself to prison. They talked as if my life were over and how it would be so very very long before I was free from this horrible obligation.

I don’t get it. I have never enjoyed anything as much as I have enjoyed this obnoxious, high maintenance, argumentative, and rebellious batch of kids that I have brought into the world.

I hope you all feel the same about your own children!

Aspirations and Realities

For whatever reason, I have had a lot of aspiring writers come to me lately feeling worried and insecure. They feel that since their work has not been published yet that they must not be very good writers. Or they are so afraid of being turned down by publishers that they can barely get themselves to write at all. They beg me for bits of wisdom to help get them over this fear and doubt. A few years ago, it was aspiring musicians asking me the same kinds of questions. What if I’m not good enough? What if I never succeed at this? What if they tell me I suck?

I don’t think it matters what career path you choose, the fear of failing at our most precious dreams is a fairly universal experience. Failing a few times (or many times) before finally succeeding is also a universal experience. There is a reason we love those stories of the underdog who keeps going, who keeps overcoming the odds, and who eventually wins the day. We want the hero story without the obstacles, the fear, and the drama that actually makes it adventurous and interesting. How boring would life be, if we easily and effortlessly achieved all of our goals? Goal setting would be about as enticing as washing dishes.

So, stop asking me to take away your fear, your nervousness, and your uncertainty about your ability to succeed. I won’t rob you of such delights. What I will do is tell you that you are worrying about the wrong thing. The question is not whether or not you are good enough, whether or not you are divinely inspired, or whether or not you are meant to succeed. The question is “Are you a decent salesman?” And for most of us, the answer is “NO! I hate trying to sell my own work!”

I have seen amazing writing passed up by publishers and I have seen wonderful musicians never become famous. I have also seen lousy books that never should have been published, the writing was AWFUL! And I’ve heard music CDs that sounded like a bunch of 4 year olds banging on pots and pans. Same goes for artists, good ones passed up and bad ones displayed in the galleries. It is not the quality of the product produced that made it a success. It was the ability to sell it to a bigwig decision maker that made it successful.

If you are an artist, writer, musician, or whatever else… don’t create your masterpiece with the sales in mind, create it with your heart and soul in mind. Just give birth to the art that is within you and do not worry about whether or not it will ever sell. Write because you are a writer, not because you may or may not become a “published author.” Paint because you are a painter, not because you may or may not become famous for it. Act, cook, compose, grow, build, teach, or whatever it is you do, because your heart sings when you do it.

Later, if you like, you can put on your salesman’s hat and try to sell the goods to others. Selling is nothing like creating. They take completely different mindsets, completely different skills, and while one is creative and intuitive, the other is plain old dollars and cents logic and practicality. Is there or is there not a market for this item? What kind of value would a buyer put on such a piece? Most successful writers, artists, actors, and musicians have a business manager, an agent, or some other person who does the “selling” for them because it is really very difficult for most of us to sell our own precious treasures.

You are an artist, writer, actor, musician, etc even if you never earn a dime from such activities. Yes, you might have to get a “real job” to make sure you have a roof over your head and food in your belly while you paint, write, or try out for roles on Broadway. But that has nothing to do with your worth or your talent. That is simply because there are so many of us with those same dreams and only so many paying jobs available. Whether or not you snag the publisher’s attention, the director’s attention, the gallery owner’s attention, the music mogul’s attention has more to do with sales, luck, and connections than it does talent.

Success is about a lot of things and talent is only one small part. You have to be hungry for it; most of us really aren’t. You have to work hard for it; most of us would rather not. You have to be willing to sacrifice a lot in the beginning; most of us won’t. You have to work your dream like it’s a job and you have to do it with an entrepreneur’s work ethic; most of us find excuses not to. However, that does not make us any less talented, any less creative, or any less special. It just means that like most people, we hate to “sell ourselves” and to risk rejection. It is safer to dream of being “discovered” than it is to actively toot our own horn. It takes a special breed to toot their own horn. It is easier to hire someone else to do it for you.

And that is the answer to your fears. If you are so afraid of rejection, that you are unable to sell your manuscripts, acting skills, musical talents, etc, then hire someone to do it for you. Yes, you pay them a percentage, but they relieve you of having to face those painful rejection letters and “don’t call us, we’ll call you” moments. Pay a professional to go through it for you, so you can get back to what you do best. Now the only question remaining, is how much are you willing to pay to avoid feeling insecure?

Hello everyone,

My older two children both work at Applebee’s Restaurant. On Veteran’s Day, they always have free food for the veterans. And the restaurant gets insanely busy. A bartender was complaining about not getting tipped very well in previous years when they did this same special offer for our servicemen and women. My daughter came home seriously upset because in her opinion, it is not about the tips; it is about saying, “Thank you!” She makes me very proud.

Happy Veteran’s Day and “thank you”.

Thanksgiving: The Holiday of Abundance

Harvest sure doesn’t look like it used to. It used to be a time when we worked really hard to pull in the crops and also prepared them for winter storage. It took a lot of people working together to reap the full harvest without losing any of it to spoilage. Men were breaking their backs pulling it all in from the fields and women were breaking their backs canning, freezing, and drying it so that it didn’t all go to waste. Things are very different now. For most of us, harvest just means there is a different set of vegetables available at the grocery store. We don’t have to break our backs digging up and hauling it all in and putting it all into storage. I for one, find that cause enough to celebrate and give thanks! The change of seasons at this time of year causes me to reflect on what our modern day harvest is really all about.

What is it that we are harvesting now? And how do we go about harvesting it? And why? We have rolled up our sleeves and worked just as hard, but at things that on the surface seem very different. We worked all year to create homes and the resources to feed and clothe our families. We have celebrated births and we have mourned deaths. We have worked on finding balance between work and play, between self and others, between commitment and detachment, and between freedom and security. We have suffered losses and we have enjoyed victories. We have stored away a rainy day savings or we haven’t. We have reaped a bountiful harvest or we have frittered our time away. Now is the time of year that we reflect on what we have actually accomplished and who helped us along the way.

Gazing out the window watching the leaves fall off the trees, I ask myself these questions. What seeds did you sow this year? Did you do the work necessary to reap the full possible harvest? Who helped you? Who did you help? Is there anything you could learn from this last year that would make next year’s harvest bigger, better, easier? What did you harvest for yourself and for your loved ones this year? What abundance did you share? How much have you set aside for those dark rainy days? Did you remember to thank people along the way? Did you appreciate the sunshine? The rains? Are you ready for the winter season?

I don’t know about you, but I have also just come to realize that I tend to forgive people who have wronged me in some way after I have spent time thinking about my blessings and how grateful I am to have received them. My attitude tends to soften and I tend to rethink my feelings towards certain people. When I hear of someone I have been angry at over the last year not having anyone to share their holiday season with, I tend to feel sorry for them rather than gloating over how beautifully karma works. Given whatever circumstances, I forgive them as much as I can and may or may not open my doors to them at that point in time.

My daydreaming naturally drifts off towards turkey dinners of the past. Those musings easily slip over into thoughts of the next bird I’m going to stuff and what to fix with it and who to invite. I then realize that the large Thanksgiving dinner we prepare is really a metaphor for sharing our abundance and is a symbol of our appreciation for the gifts that we have received. Don’t we wish to share the abundance ceremony with our loved ones who have brought so many blessings into our lives over the last year? I snicker to myself as I notice the way we grumble and complain when we have to share our feast with relatives who screw with our ability to harvest a wonderful life.

Look back in history and you will find that most cultures have some kind of giving back to say “thank you” ceremony during the fall season. Some cultures give the best of their abundance to a god or leader of some kind for blessing them. Others break bread with their loved ones to thank each other for sticking together and enduring another year of life’s ups and downs. Families, like the different cultures, have their own little ceremonies and traditions wrapped around the harvest festival we call Thanksgiving. On some level, we seem to know that we have to give back as a form of saying “thank you”.

Do we do this annual “thank you” ceremony because it is some kind of a cosmic requirement or is it just human nature? Does saying “thank you” insure future years will experience abundance? No, we all know that famine happens. It is part of the life cycle. Okay, but it might not be human nature either because I know plenty of people who are not thankful nor appreciative of anything nor anyone. So why do we do this? Why have we celebrated an abundance festival throughout the history of mankind? Is it rooted in our superstitious scared little minds that if we don’t, some force bigger and stronger than us will come down and force us to experience lack and loss? Regardless of why we do it, it does not hurt anything and it actually feels really good to sit and ponder our blessings and to give thanks for it. Maybe that is all we need to keep us doing it, it simply feels good and that is cause enough.

It is my belief that the thankful attitudes we experience during the Thanksgiving holiday are what motivate us to overspend at Christmas time. During Thanksgiving we sit and contemplate how thankful we are and to whom and why. Then, we end our year with a grand finale of gift giving. Come January, we find ourselves making resolutions, goals, plans, and vows for the next year. To everything, a season and a time.

Growing Younger

I am finished with being a grown up. I want to play more. I want to eat ice-cream at the beach. I want to be more concerned about my toe polish than my bank account. I want to wear bright colors that remind me of crayons and finger paints. I want to laugh until I snort and honk like a goose. I want to sing in the grocery store and skip on my way out to the car. I want to grow younger as I age and I don’t want to have to make excuses or be made to apologize for my actions.

I want to feel that sense of gleefulness when we decide to go to the park. I want to get excited when they announce new Saturday morning cartoon shows next fall. I want to buy new sandals in every color and goofy sunglasses to match. I want to lie on my side, roll down a hill of grass and wildflowers, and not think once about grass stains or dirty smudges.

I want to love as if my heart has never been broken. I want to give 100% without hesitating because it might not work out. I want to run into old lovers and laugh for the joy of seeing an old friend. I want to make love like it is still new forbidden territory. I want to kiss with a giggle in my heart and a twinkle in my eye.

I want to go back to school and learn fun new things, like how to dance and sing. I want to learn about movies and ancient civilizations and hummingbirds and how to say, “I love you” in three different languages. I want to lose myself in books and not worry about book reports, homework, tests, or honor roll. I want to sit in the front row fascinated by a smart and enthusiastic teacher. I want to connect the dots and color outside of the lines.

I want to build towers with blocks just to knock them down and watch them fall. I want to make trails and paths with dominos and then gently tap that first one so the others will fall down one at a time. I want to dress my cat in doll clothes, put him in an Easter basket, and drive him around on my bicycle in that basket swinging on the handlebars like when I was eight years old. I want to roller skate and play hopscotch.

I want to believe with all my heart that I could be an astronaut, a dancer, a rock star, or a racecar driver if I just set my mind to it. I want a clean slate and all options still open. I want to feel that hunger to aspire to something great. I want to feel like I was put on this planet for a very special reason. I want to assume that the world wants my gift as much as I want to give it.

I want to trust strangers without giving it a second thought. I want to believe that adults actually have all of the answers and our best interests at heart. I want to feel safe and protected simply because my dad locked the front door before saying “goodnight.” I want to feel the invincibility and cockiness of youth. I want to believe in people’s potential despite their choices. I want to assume that I can talk my way out of anything.

I want a do-over with my first driving lesson, my first serious boyfriend, my first pregnancy, and my first job. I promise this time I will be braver, more honest, smarter, and I won’t take anything for granted. I want to feel the rush of all those firsts again. I want to take more pictures this time.

I want to nap in the sunshine and make whistles from wide pieces of grass. I want to catch ladybugs and fireflies. I want to tell ghost stories and suspect that they might come true. I want to run with grass stained bare feet. I want to get lost in make-believe and forget to go home for lunch.

I want to learn how to do cartwheels, backwards somersaults, and handsprings. I want to fall down with gusto and wear my wounds with pride. I want to climb trees and hold my breath as the tree sways with the wind. I want to play Dodge Ball and Four-Square and Duck Duck Goose.

I want to go to birthday parties with balloons and streamers. I want to look forward to growing another year older and tease my peers for being younger than me. I want to receive frivolous toys and funny new hats instead of kitchen appliances and useful tools. I want to spend weeks creating the perfect Halloween costume and I want to believe in Santa Clause, the Tooth Fairy, and Peter Pan.

I want to play Pong, Ms Pacman, and Donkey Kong. I want to recite riddles and puns. I want to know all the words to all those songs. I want to play pool and ping-pong, croquet, and badminton. I want to reread the Hobbit and Huckleberry Finn. I want to watch Batman, Underdog, and the Little Rascals.

Today I want to grow younger rather than wiser. I want to play hooky, no bosses, no chores, and no bills. I want to pull the kids out of school and run off to the zoo. I want to play at the park and rhyme like Seuss. I want to say, “yes” to donuts and “no thank you” to lima beans. I want to find a rainbow and chase a leprechaun. I want to teach my children the fine art of puddle jumping and leapfrog. I want to chase butterflies and make cookies. I want to see life as my playground. I want to believe in magic and love at first sight. Fearless and brave I want to shout, “Gimme more!”
